Eddie, 26
When is the end of your world?
A stranger was approaching me on the sidewalk at the park, and I stopped him and asked if he had time for an interesting question.
Eddie, 26, just sort of stared at me at first when I asked what he thinks happens to us after we die, but then he broke into a big grin and said "Me and my friends were just talking about that!"
He described how they like to go out and throw back a few beers and talk about all the deeper issues of life. They usually end up talking about the latest theories about our origins and destiny that they've seen on cable TV shows or the internet, with government conspiracies and alien invasions being discussed right along with religious beliefs.
End of the world scenarios are a common theme, so I told how Jesus foresaw times like these as written in the Bible, with the exact date of the end of the world being unavailable to us but foreshadowed like labor contractions before childbirth, with natural and man-made disasters happening more intensely and more frequently.
"Even though we can't know when the end of the world will be, the truth is the end of YOUR world could happen any time. The Bible says we are appointed to die and face judgment, so how would you be judged when you must stand and be held accountable before God?"
I had spent some time listening to all of Eddie's conspiracy theories, but now he was the one who was willing to do some listening as he confronted the fact that these are issues one doesn't use simply for entertainment along with a few friends and some beer.
Eddie came to an understanding and acceptance of the Gospel on an intellectual level, and knows he has some important decisions to make regarding repentance and trusting in Jesus. Let's pray he does, through the faith only God can give!
