A quick comment about Chicago’s crazy weather on the way into the
grocery store led to sharing the gospel as the conversation continued inside
the store 15 minutes later. How does
that work? How can we make the
transition from a natural conversation to a spiritual one?
The man I made the comment to, Tom, was unusually chatty, and once
inside the store our conversation naturally progressed from one topic to
another. But it didn’t lead to the
Gospel, and I don’t believe in trying to manipulate a conversation according to
a hidden agenda. It’s better to just ask
for a complete change of subject: “Hey,
I have a crazy question for you. This is
a totally different subject but I ask random people and I get a variety of
responses.”
“Sure, what is it?”
“What do you think happens after we die?”
Tom was very interested in talking about it, and this second half of
our conversation didn’t go off on multiple tangents like the first half,
because I had specifically asked this separate and specific question.
Want to have a Gospel conversation, but don’t know how to get it
started? Just ask!
