2/16/10 Jose, 56
Today I had a half-hour conversation near the frozen foods section at the store with Jose, an older African-American man from Mississippi. Jose was trying to find a way - any way but Jesus - that he could be assured of salvation. He wanted to trust in his own personal goodness, or in a god who forgives anyone with no consequence for sin, or in the sincerity of his own apology for his "mistakes" (sins). In the end he finally decided he would just "take his chances" and hope for forgiveness. Why not put his trust in Jesus? Because to trust in Jesus means repentance, and there are things in Jose's life he just won't let go of.
