Tom 25
Do we have to throw out our common sense to be a
Christian? That’s basically what Tom,
25, was asking me in a sidewalk conversation today. “So, as a Christian do you believe in
science?” he asked me. Tom is an
international student at IIT from Indonesia.
He doesn’t believe in life after death, and said he bases his beliefs on
science. My answer – “A lot of people
think that Christians can’t believe in science.
But the opposite is really true – scientists can’t believe in God, at
least according to the scientific method.
They limit themselves to what can be measured and proven through
experimentation. But God can’t be
measured, predicted, or controlled like, say, electricity. He has a personality and decides what to do
and when He wants to do it regardless of our scientific methods. God created the physical laws that the
scientific method is based on, but as the Creator He is above those laws. The Bible says that faith is what is pleasing
to Him, which means we need to have a faith relationship with God that doesn’t
depend on the scientific method. As a
Christian, I am free to enjoy the many benefits of science, but scientists who
rule out the possibility of God and His supernatural miracles are not free to
enjoy the benefits of faith.” So who is
really free? Let’s use some common
sense!
