A desperate father begged a traveling preacher to heal his
son.
The preacher answered his request,
saying “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
A trite saying? Heard
it all before? Too good to be true?
For people who have grown up in churchgoing families, the easy,
trite answers of their childhood often don’t hold up under the uncertainties
and pressures of adulthood. Life gets
complicated, and their simple faith needs to get more complicated along with
it.
That’s where I found Becca, willing to lend a little time at
the coffeeshop to explain her complicated faith and her ongoing struggle with
doubt. I appreciated her honesty, her openness
about her struggle, her willingness to try a new worship environment, and her commitment
to spiritual disciplines.
Becca seems to
be willing to confront questions for the sake of overcoming her doubts, as
opposed to the many skeptics I’ve talked with who ask questions only to feed
their doubts.
Becca seemed to me to be like the boy’s father who answered
the preacher “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
When we talk with people who are struggling with their
personal demons, whether they be evils spirits or nagging doubts, we want to
ask the Preacher - “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
And we will get the same answer He gave his disciples so
many years ago - “This kind can come out only by prayer.” (Mark 9:29)
