Catholic Faith, Superficial Judgments, Works-based Language, Grace-based Heart

4/10/19       Elena  (see video HERE)

Hundreds of outreach conversations on the streets and in the marketplace over the past 10 years have taught me not to make superficial judgments about people, but to dig deep with good questions that get to the heart of their beliefs – and even then only God knows the heart.

Many who seem to be Christians on first glance eventually reveal that their faith is really only in themselves and their own self-perceived goodness or good deeds.  On the other hand many who seem to be trusting in their good works actually have a humble heart, a love for Jesus, and a deep faith in Christ alone for salvation.

I believe Elena to be one of those people.  As a Catholic, she hadn’t heard much of the grace-based language of faith that protestants are used to, so her initial explanation of her beliefs about heaven and salvation seemed very works-based.  But as we talked her humility and love for Jesus became evident, and I became convinced that her faith is in Christ alone.  I wanted to help her more clearly articulate that faith as she expressed concern for family members who don’t yet know the Lord, and we went on to a wonderful fellowship and prayer between fellow believers.

Thanks, Elena, for allowing me to record our conversation!  It can be seen HERE
