Godly Counsel for a Young Father at Menards

5/10/20    Frederico    (see HERE)

Ever try to convince someone else of what you really aren’t sure of yourself?  The hypocrisy is impossible to hide, and nowhere is it more obvious than when parents try to pass along Christian values and beliefs to their children when they’ve never taken ownership of them for themselves.

Parenthood is a big responsibility, but I wasn’t trying to add an additional burden on the shoulders of a young father named Frederico I talked with while shopping at Menards.  I told him how God said that as parents we are to “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

In other words, as parents we are to become so familiar with God’s words and truths that they become a natural part of our everyday life and the lessons we teach our children on a daily basis, not something we relegate to a professional at church and certainly not something we just hope they learn for themselves somehow.

Frederico admitted that he had never really taken ownership of the Christian faith he had grown up with, and I was trying to show him that to do so now not only affects his own salvation and ongoing relationship with God, but that it will also have a profound effect on his children and the future of his family.

Jesus said ““Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I wasn’t so much adding an additional burden on the shoulders of a young father, but just trying to help him with the one he already has.

Thanks, Frederico, for allowing me to record our conversation!  It can be seen at https://youtu.be/YeAdBi95J68
