Love and Good Deeds

 8/20/2020          Abraham

“If you could get to heaven by being a good enough person, then you wouldn’t need Jesus, right?”

Sometimes I ask this question during my outreach conversations, like one I had recently with a Catholic named Abraham while shopping at a Target store.  Based on a few of his statements, it seemed to me that Abraham could be described as “a man after God’s own heart” like King David was, and that he truly loves Jesus.

So I think this question was a bit of a shocker to Abraham, and I wanted it to be.  Though he professes Jesus as Lord and Savior, Abraham was quick to point to his good works when I asked on what basis he was saved.  For someone like Abraham, the REASON we are saved – by grace through faith in Jesus – is often confused with the RESULTS of being saved – doing “good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  (Ephesians 2:8-10)

The love and gratitude Abraham feels toward Jesus shouldn’t be hidden from others, and it was his confusion about the role of good works that can hide the fact that he wants and needs a Savior.  I asked this question as a friendly reminder not to stray from the love he has for Jesus as Savior, before he became confused by the good works that came into his life when he began to call Him Lord.

Thanks, Abraham, for allowing me to record our conversation!  It can be seen on my YouTube Channel at https://youtu.be/rvNHmREaL_g
